URGENT UPDATE: Jean Marie (Bee) Sumner, a cherished mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away on October 24, 2025, at her home in Rockport, Texas. After a long and courageous battle with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, her family reports she has finally found peace.
Born on December 21, 1952, in Plum City, Wisconsin, Jean grew up in Embarrass, Minnesota. She graduated from Virginia High School in 1971 and later earned her B.Acc. from the University of Minnesota Duluth in 1981. Jean had a successful career at Wells Fargo, where she worked until her retirement in 2006.
Jean’s vibrant spirit shone brightest through her love of travel. She and her husband, Steve Sumner, married on February 14, 1987, in Duluth and enjoyed many adventures together, spending weeks in Mexico and the Caribbean. Following her retirement, Jean split her time between Yuma, Arizona, and Rockport, Texas, returning to Embarrass during the summer months.
She leaves behind a loving family, including her daughters: Leslie (Brad) Brunfelt of Duluth; Kristen (John) Peek of Orlando; and Amy (Dennis) Christopherson of Arkansaw, Wisconsin. Jean is also survived by her stepson Jason Sumner, bonus daughter Julie Sumner, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren who adored her, including Emily and Sydney Hanna, and Tabitha (Cody) Strzyzykowski.
Jean’s siblings, including Linda (Duane) Henry, Ann Lamppa, Jodi (Perry) Kronenbush, and Chuck (Patty) Bee, along with many nieces, nephews, and friends, will deeply miss her presence. She is preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, son Travis Nevala, and brother-in-law Lon Lamppa.
