Donald Dicklich, Former St. Louis County Auditor, Dies at 73

BREAKING: Donald Dicklich, a respected public servant and former St. Louis County Auditor, has died at the age of 73 after a courageous battle with esophageal cancer. He passed away on October 27, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of community service and dedication.

Born to Bogdan “Bob” Dicklich and Mildred Kelsey Dicklich, Don was a proud graduate of Hibbing Schools, where he was a key member of the 1970 3rd place State Championship Hockey Team. He later earned his Bachelor of Science in Business and pursued an MBA from the University of Minnesota, showcasing his commitment to education and professional growth.

In June 1975, he married Mary Zanoni, and together they raised two daughters, Gina Marie and Dawn Michele. Don’s professional journey began at U.S. Steel Corp., where he worked at the Mintac Mine and Plant, and later in the USS Great Lakes Fleet, demonstrating a strong work ethic and dedication to his roles.

Transitioning to healthcare, Dicklich spent 14 years in Healthcare Administration at what is now known as Essentia Health. His career continued to flourish as he became the Administrative Manager/CFO at the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board, a key economic development agency in Minnesota.

In a pivotal moment in 2004, Don was appointed St. Louis County Auditor-Treasurer, a role in which he was re-elected three times, serving nearly 15 years until his retirement in January 2019. His leadership was instrumental in the county’s financial management, earning him respect from colleagues and constituents alike.

Active in his community and church, Don served on several boards, including as President of the Men’s Club and a dedicated choir member. His commitment to service extended beyond his professional life, reflecting his deep-rooted values.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents and both parents. He is survived by his daughters, Gina Lund and Dawn Verdone, along with siblings Ron Dicklich, Diana Broste, Cherilyn McEnery, five nieces, a nephew, eight grandnieces and nephews, and one granddaughter, Kennady Lund, who he cherished deeply.

Don Dicklich’s passing marks the end of a significant chapter in the community. His impact on public service and family legacy will not be forgotten. As the community mourns this loss, tributes and memories are expected to pour in, celebrating his life and contributions.
