The Rambler Food Truck Closes After 12 Years of Service

BREAKING: The Rambler, a beloved food truck serving the Twin Ports for over 12 years, has officially closed its doors following its final service on October 30, 2023. This sudden farewell marks the end of an era, leaving many in the Duluth community reflecting on the truck’s iconic dishes like their famous mahi mahi tacos and bacon-wrapped slaw dog.

At a special farewell event held at The Tasting Room in Duluth, owner Jonathan Reznick expressed his bittersweet emotions, referring to The Rambler as “his baby.” Launched in 2012, The Rambler not only paved the way for Northland’s mobile food scene but also led to the establishment of Midcoast Catering in 2017 and the recent addition of The Tasting Room at 313 N. Central Ave.

This decision comes as the food truck industry in Duluth becomes more saturated, prompting Reznick and his team to concentrate on catering services, which currently account for a staggering 70% of their business. The Rambler contributed about 15%, while The Tasting Room reservations accounted for 10%. The shift aims to enhance their offerings for special events, including private tastings and corporate catering services.

Kelsey Auran, kitchen manager at Midcoast, stated, “People are very eager to customize these menus for their specific events. And we absolutely love a challenge.” She emphasized that the dedicated staff is cross-trained in catering and bartending, ensuring no loss of hours for employees during this transition.

The Rambler was a fixture at major local events, serving thousands at venues like Bayfront Festival Park, and hosting significant occasions such as concerts and corporate gatherings. Auran reminisced about her first big event with The Rambler in 2018, recalling the excitement of serving at a Trampled By Turtles concert, saying, “It was a blast!”

The decision to sunset the food truck allows for a focused approach towards creating memorable experiences in the catering realm. “It’s just wonderful seeing what else has evolved and developed in the food truck scene in Duluth; we feel as though it’s in good hands,” Auran added.

As for the future of The Rambler food truck itself, plans remain uncertain. The team is considering whether to sell it to aspiring entrepreneurs or retain it for future endeavors.

This closure resonates deeply with the community, as The Rambler has been a symbol of culinary innovation and local flavor in Duluth. Residents are left both hungry for the memories and curious about what comes next for Midcoast Catering.
