The University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) has announced the appointment of Dr. Jay Butler as the new dean of its College of Health, effective December 28, 2025. Dr. Butler, a prominent figure in the field of infectious diseases, brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously served as the deputy director for infectious diseases at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Dr. Butler has an extensive background in public health, particularly in Alaska and Arctic health. His career includes significant positions such as Alaska’s chief medical officer and the director of the CDC’s Arctic Investigations Program. He also held the role of senior director of community health services for the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium. With over 16 years as an affiliate professor at UAA, Butler has established strong ties with the university.
UAA Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Denise Runge, expressed confidence in Dr. Butler’s abilities, stating, “His leadership and commitment to Alaska will be instrumental in strengthening UAA’s position as the state’s designated health university.” Runge highlighted the exciting opportunities ahead for UAA, emphasizing the strong support from faculty and staff within the College of Health.
