Mustache Challenge Launches Tonight to Fundraise for Kids

UPDATE: The annual mustache-growing fundraiser, organized by Mustaches For Kids Nashville, kicks off tonight at 6 PM CST at Tailgate Brewing in Franklin, Tennessee. This Clean Shave event will see participants removing their facial hair in preparation for a month-long challenge aimed at raising funds for local children’s charities.

Participants will shave clean tonight and then grow mustaches throughout November, soliciting donations from friends and family along the way. “When you normally have a big beard and you shave clean, people that know you are going to look at you and give you a double take,” said Mike Simmons, president of Mustaches for Kids Nashville. “That’s the perfect intro for you to say, ‘this is what I’m doing, this is why I’m doing it.’”

Barber Mark Young, co-owner of Dark Horse Collective, will assist participants at the Clean Shave event. “One by one we’re just going to start taking all the facial hair off, get a nice clean slate and have them boys grow some cool mustaches,” Young stated.

This year’s fundraising efforts will benefit two local charities: Williamson County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) and the Transformation Life Center. Since its inception in 2021, the Nashville chapter has raised over $121,000 for various charitable causes.

Participants like Jason Koontz are already promoting their efforts online, sharing their clean-shaven looks and encouraging others to donate. “I shaved everything down and started making some content to post online and promote the ‘stache growing season,” Koontz revealed.

Fellow participant Patrick Kapla expressed pride in not only growing a mustache but also in his role in recruiting charity partners. “It’s a really good feeling, especially being involved this year in recruiting one of our charity partners to join,” Kapla said.

As the fun unfolds throughout November, participants will engage the community, sharing laughs and challenges along the way. “Just sort of laugh at the fact that some of us don’t grow very good mustaches, and some of us do,” Simmons added, emphasizing the charitable spirit behind the event.
