Washington AG Launches New Transparency Unit to Boost Public Access

URGENT UPDATE: The Washington State Attorney General’s Office has just announced the launch of a new Public Records and Open Government Unit, marking a critical step in enhancing government transparency. This initiative, which includes the creation of a first-ever Chief Transparency Counsel, aims to streamline public records processes amid a dramatic surge in requests.

As public trust in government continues to wane, Attorney General Nick Brown emphasized the urgency of this move. “Transparency is a key part of the work we do every day to protect and support Washingtonians,” Brown stated. His office has seen public records requests soar from 528 in 2014 to a staggering 1,032 in 2024, underscoring the necessity for improved access and oversight.

The newly formed unit will consolidate existing teams under unified leadership, enabling a more efficient response to the increasing volume of public records requests. The Chief Transparency Counsel will be responsible for both overseeing this unit and proposing enhancements to ensure that citizens receive timely access to important government information.

In a proactive effort to bolster open government, the AG’s office is not stopping at this internal restructuring. Earlier this month, they proposed significant updates to the model rules governing responses to the Public Records Act. These changes are designed to assist state agencies in providing more prompt and thorough access to public records. A public comment period is currently open, with an in-person hearing scheduled for Thursday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the John A. Cherberg Building. Remote participation will also be available via Zoom, allowing more citizens to engage in the democratic process.

The search for the Chief Transparency Counsel concluded today, with applications now closed. A selection is expected by the end of the year, positioning the AG’s office for a significant advancement in bridging the gap between government actions and public insight.

This initiative highlights the AG’s commitment to fostering an informed and engaged public, seeking to demystify governmental operations. For further details on the upcoming hearing and participation options, visit the AG’s official website.

As Washington State moves forward with this crucial transparency initiative, it underscores an essential moment for public engagement and accountability. Stay tuned for updates on the selection of the Chief Transparency Counsel and further developments in this evolving story.
