Google Data Center Project Sparks Outrage in Monrovia, IN

UPDATE: Residents in Monrovia, Indiana, are expressing outrage over a massive Google data center project that has moved forward without adequate community input. County commissioners approved a rezoning request for an additional 158 acres of farmland just last month, expanding Google’s campus footprint to over 500 acres in the area.

This development has caught many local residents off guard, as they report learning about the project only after significant decisions had already been made. Business owner Carrie Syczylo, who operates a coffee shop in town, voiced her frustration, stating, “Why does Google get to come in here with really not a complete business plan?”

The rezoning, which was initially approved in February, has raised alarms among locals regarding increased traffic, environmental concerns, and potential drops in property values. Many residents say they feel blindsided by the rapid progression of the project, which they believe lacked transparency from the tech giant and local officials.

Supporters of the data center, including Mike Dellinger from the Morgan County Economic Development Corporation, argue that the project will create jobs and bring vital investment to the community. Dellinger stated, “A project of this magnitude presents the opportunity to bring jobs and needed investment for our schools and critical county services without raising taxes on our residents.”

Google has acknowledged the collaboration with local and state leaders, emphasizing their commitment to planning for future capacity needs.

“We are always planning for future capacity needs, which includes evaluating options to expand our data center presence in markets across the U.S.,”

said Broderick Green, Google Data Center Public Affairs Manager.

However, the backlash continues as some residents seek legal action to challenge the rezoning decisions. “We’re not mad at the property owner,” Syczylo added. “We’re mad because they are putting a business here that is not zoned to be here, and they did it behind our backs.”

As the situation develops, locals are urging ongoing dialogue with their leaders to ensure that community voices are heard. The future of this project remains uncertain as legal challenges loom and community sentiments intensify.

Residents are determined to hold local officials accountable and advocate for their interests as this significant development in Monrovia unfolds. Stay tuned for further updates on this urgent situation that is reshaping the community.
