NIU’s Electric Microcar Heads to Production, Launch Imminent

UPDATE: NIU’s innovative electric microcar, the NIUMM, is officially set for production, following a successful showcase at EICMA 2025 in Milan. The microcar, designed specifically for urban commuters, is now completing its final homologation testing, paving the way for its commercial launch.

This compact vehicle, classified as an L6e quadricycle, utilizes a pair of batteries from NIU’s popular NQi-series scooters, allowing it to achieve a range of approximately 70 km (about 43 miles) at maximum speeds of 45 km/h (around 28 mph), the legal limit for this category.

The NIUMM’s design caters to urban residents, offering an accessible alternative to traditional cars. The vehicle features built-in extra battery slots, enabling users to nearly double the range by carrying additional batteries. This is particularly beneficial for existing NIU scooter owners, who can leverage their current battery systems.

According to Sieghart Michielsen, NIU’s Director of International Operations, the completion of homologation testing is the last significant hurdle before the microcar hits the market, confirming that a launch is imminent.

The L6e quadricycle segment is gaining traction in European cities, appealing to a diverse demographic, including teenagers, city dwellers, and older adults. Its lightweight design and low speed requirements mean that drivers can operate these vehicles with a moped license in many countries, making them a practical choice for navigating congested urban environments.

The NIUMM joins a growing list of successful L6e models in Europe, such as the Citroen Ami, known for its minimalist approach and affordable price point of around €7,000. Other models like the Renault Twizy and Microlino have demonstrated the strong demand for small, electric vehicles that offer ease of use without the complexities of full-sized cars.

As urban areas continue to evolve towards more sustainable transportation solutions, the NIUMM stands poised to capture consumer interest and market share. While specific pricing and availability details remain under wraps, NIU is expected to make announcements shortly, keeping consumers and enthusiasts eagerly anticipating the launch.

For those looking for a modern, eco-friendly commuting option, the NIUMM could represent a significant step towards a car-light future in Europe. Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops.
