UPDATE: A 23-year-old woman has died following a shooting in Horace, and her boyfriend is now in custody as authorities conduct an urgent investigation. Cass County Sheriff Jesse Jahner provided critical updates during a press conference held on November 6, 2023, confirming that the victim is identified as Sakeena Khaadi.
The incident unfolded at the Carlson Place apartment complex located at 7994 Jacks Way, where Khaadi was discovered in a hallway with a gunshot wound early Wednesday morning. The initial 911 call was received at 7:53 a.m., with a male caller expressing uncertainty about Khaadi’s condition. Emergency responders found two residents attempting to perform life-saving measures on her; however, Khaadi tragically succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
By 8:16 a.m., law enforcement detained Khaadi’s boyfriend, 21-year-old Derrick Lobbo, who was reported to have sought help at a nearby clinic shortly after the shooting. Sheriff Jahner revealed that Lobbo displayed erratic behavior, running down the street yelling before his apprehension.
During a safety sweep of the couple’s apartment, deputies found Khaadi and Lobbo’s 2-year-old son in close proximity to a firearm, raising serious concerns about child safety. Protective services have intervened, securing placement for the child with his paternal grandfather.
Lobbo currently faces allegations of reckless endangerment and child neglect.
