Safeway to Close Hayward Store in 2026, Promises Job Transfers

UPDATE: Safeway has confirmed it will close its supermarket located at 231 West Jackson St., Hayward, on February 2, 2026. The decision impacts 76 associates who currently work at the store, but the company is committed to ensuring all affected employees are transferred to other locations in the area.

According to a WARN letter sent to the California Employment Development Department, Safeway’s Vice President of Human Resources, Terra Powers, stated there are no anticipated layoffs from this closure. “We do not foresee any layoffs as a result of the closure,” she wrote in a letter dated November 5. The grocery giant aims to place all associates into positions at nearby stores, enhancing job security during this transition.

Safeway will be working closely with union representatives from the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 5 and Baker’s Union Local 125 to facilitate these transfers. Safeway has also indicated that employees with seniority will have bumping rights, allowing them to potentially take positions held by less senior workers at other locations. However, it remains unclear how this process may affect job security for current employees at those sites.

Powers emphasized the company’s commitment to its workers, stating, “The exact placement of positions has not yet been completed.” While the store will cease operations on February 2, associates will continue working until the closure date, ensuring a smooth transition for customers and employees alike.

As this situation develops, further updates on specific job placements and the impact on other locations are expected. Safeway’s proactive approach aims to minimize disruption for its employees and maintain operational continuity throughout the transition.
