URGENT UPDATE: A dedicated 11-year veteran of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY), Firefighter Patrick D. Brady, tragically died in the line of duty on October 28, 2023, while responding to an “all-hands fire” in Brooklyn. This devastating news was confirmed by Mayor Eric Adams earlier today.
Brady was actively engaged in firefighting operations on the roof of 9407 Kings Highway near Brownsville when he suffered a medical emergency and went into cardiac arrest. Despite immediate treatment from his fellow firefighters, he was rushed to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
“Firefighter Patrick Brady gave his life protecting the city we all love; there is no sacrifice that is more selfless than the actions that took place this evening,” Mayor Adams stated, expressing his heartfelt condolences to Brady’s wife, Kara, and their family during this profoundly difficult time.
FDNY Commissioner Robert S. Tucker echoed the sentiment of loss, stating that the entire department is heartbroken over this tragedy. Brady joined the FDNY in 2014 and comes from a distinguished lineage of firefighters; both of his brothers, Jimmy and Brian, as well as numerous cousins and uncles, are also members of the FDNY.
“Firefighter Brady came from a family of firefighters — all dedicated to protecting the lives of their fellow New Yorkers,” Mayor Adams added, emphasizing the profound impact Brady’s commitment had on the community.
This heartbreaking incident marks Brady as the 1,163rd member of the FDNY to die in the line of duty. The last recorded loss was Paramedic Salih Abdur Rahman, a 23-year veteran, who passed away on October 29, 2022, after completing a shift.
As the FDNY community mourns the loss of one of its heroes, officials are urging the public to honor Brady’s legacy by remembering the sacrifices made by firefighters daily. The department is working to support Brady’s family during this tragic time.
As developments emerge, the FDNY has called for a moment of reflection on the bravery and dedication shown by its members. The loss of Firefighter Brady serves as a poignant reminder of the risks faced by those who protect our city.
