In a strategic move, the Los Angeles Chargers traded safety Alohi Gilman Jr. to the Baltimore Ravens for outside linebacker Odafe Oweh. This trade, which took place on October 7, 2023, aimed to bolster the Chargers’ pass rush during a critical period when Hall of Fame pass rusher Khalil Mack was sidelined due to an elbow injury. Since joining the Chargers, Oweh has made a significant impact, contributing four sacks and 12 tackles over five games.
The decision to acquire Oweh came at a time when the Chargers’ pass rush had stagnated following a promising performance from rookie Tuli Tuipulotu, who recorded four sacks in a loss to the New York Giants on September 28. Without Mack, who returned from injured reserve on October 19, the team needed more depth and effectiveness in its defensive front.
Oweh’s Contribution to the Chargers
Since the trade, Oweh’s performance has exceeded expectations. His ability to pressure opposing quarterbacks has not only revitalized the Chargers’ pass rush but has also enhanced the overall effectiveness of the defense. Defensive coordinator Jesse Minter praised Oweh, stating, “It’s what wins in this league, the ability to affect the quarterback. Having that edge room be a strength, I think any coach would love to have that. So, (Oweh) was a huge addition for us.”
With Oweh on the roster and Mack back in action, the Chargers have successfully reinstated a three-player rotation that had previously yielded positive results. This rotation includes Oweh, Tuipulotu, and Mack, which has proven more effective than the lineup without Mack. Additionally, the emergence of second-year defensive lineman Justin Eboigbe, who has recorded four sacks in the last six games, has further strengthened the team’s defensive capabilities.
As of now, Tuipulotu leads the team with eight sacks, while Oweh, Mack, and Eboigbe each have four. Linebacker Daiyan Henley has also contributed with three sacks. The collective effort of these players has created a more formidable defensive line, which is critical as the Chargers aim for success in the remaining regular-season games.
Impact of Mack’s Return
The Chargers have experienced a resurgence since Mack’s return, winning eight out of nine games with him on the field. His presence has been instrumental, as he has recorded at least one sack in four of his past five games. Notably, Mack is now among an elite group of players, joining Hall of Famer Kevin Greene as the only individuals to achieve 35 sacks or more with three different teams since the NFL made sack records official in 1982.
Quarterback Justin Herbert continues to shine in his role, ranking third in the NFL with 19 touchdown passes. He is on track to achieve his sixth consecutive season with 20 or more touchdown passes, a feat previously accomplished only by legendary quarterbacks such as Peyton Manning, Dan Marino, and Russell Wilson. Herbert also ranks second in passing yardage with 2,610 yards, closely trailing Daniel Jones of the Indianapolis Colts.
As the Chargers move forward in the season, the successful trade for Oweh has not only addressed immediate needs but has also set a solid foundation for the team’s defensive strategy. The coaching staff’s early assessment of the trade, which they rate an A-plus, reflects their confidence in Oweh’s ongoing contributions and the overall improvement of the defensive unit.
