Cougars Dominate Citrus College with 6-2 Victory on Sophomore Night

UPDATE: The College of the Canyons Cougars delivered a stunning performance, defeating Citrus College 6-2 during their annual Sophomore Night on November 3, 2023. This victory marks a season-high for goals scored in a match, showcasing the Cougars’ resilience on their home field.

With this win, the Cougars improved their season record to 5-11-3 and maintained an even 4-4-2 home record. The team celebrated their five graduating sophomores—Diego Briseno, Steven Garcia, Juandiego Rodriguez, Jeffrey Contreras, and Leon Mikailian—prior to kick-off, recognizing their vital contributions over the past two seasons.

The Cougars broke a scoreless tie just seconds into the second half, with Ivan Omana scoring his first goal of the season in the 47th minute, assisted by Andrew Sorto. Omana quickly doubled the lead only a minute later, pushing the score to 2-0. Citrus managed to respond in the 61st minute when Kevin Cardenas netted a goal, narrowing the gap to 2-1.

However, the Cougars swiftly regained control, with Contreras scoring his first of the season in the 73rd minute. Citrus fought back again through another goal from Cardenas, making it 3-2. The Cougars, undeterred, marked their dominance with two more goals from Rodriguez in the 74th and 87th minutes, bringing his season total to three. Rodriguez’s first was assisted by Justin Assadi, while his second was set up by Mikailian.

Mikailian capped off the scoring frenzy with a final goal in the 90th minute, sealing the match at a decisive 6-2. Cougars goalkeeper Jonathan Mazon started in goal with two saves, but David Zendejas (3-8) earned the win after playing the second half.

The Cougars’ performance was marked by a staggering 26 shots in total, with 17 on target, and they earned nine corners throughout the game. Citrus goalkeeper AJ Baragan made an impressive nine saves despite the onslaught.
