UPDATE: The Dallas Morning News and Al Día are set to host an urgent community event, DFW Sabores en la Comunidad, on December 11. This Spanish-language gathering will spotlight the D-FW Sabores project, showcasing authentic Mexican cuisine in North Texas.
Starting at 6:00 p.m. at the Vickery Park Library in Dallas, attendees can expect an engaging discussion led by senior food reporter Imelda García alongside three local Mexican chefs. This panel will delve into the cultural significance of food in the community, emphasizing that Mexican cuisine is far more diverse than just tacos.
García stated, “Beyond the dishes and their history, this series is about the people who cook them.” The event will highlight the rich cultural heritage of Mexican cooking, featuring techniques passed down through generations.
Attendees will also have the chance to sample signature dishes from various restaurants involved in the project, with food available for purchase. This initiative is part of a broader effort by The News to connect with the Hispanic community, which accounts for approximately 42% of Dallas County’s population, as reported by the U.S. Census.
In previous events, such as one held in April at Casa Guanajuato, The News addressed critical issues like access to mental health resources for the Hispanic community. Managing editor Amy Hollyfield emphasized the newsroom’s commitment: “Food is an equalizer to bring people together. Highlighting this project reflects our love for Mexican food and culture.”
The D-FW Sabores project has featured over 30 dishes from various Mexican states including Oaxaca and Jalisco, showcasing the diversity of flavors and traditions through visits to high-end restaurants, food trucks, and family kitchens. The event is free and open to all community members interested in exploring the rich tapestry of Mexican culinary traditions.
