BREAKING NEWS: Fargo’s downtown has just welcomed its largest public parking ramp, a stunning new facility that promises to enhance urban mobility and community engagement. The grand opening, celebrated on November 14, 2023, marks a significant milestone for the city, with the $20 million, 480-stall garage located at 602 NP Ave.
City leaders, including Mayor Tim Mahoney, hailed the grand opening as a vital development for the growing downtown area. “With so many people coming downtown, they need a place to park,” Mahoney stated, emphasizing the ramp’s importance in accommodating increasing foot traffic.
This seven-floor parking structure is part of a larger $60 million project that will also feature a six-story housing complex and the new home of the Fargo Moorhead Community Theater. The ramp not only boasts an impressive 360-degree view of the city from its seventh floor but also incorporates advanced security features. Motorists will utilize a QR code system for entry and exit, enhancing safety and reducing loitering and vandalism issues previously faced in other facilities.
Jim Gilmour, Fargo’s director of strategic planning and research, highlighted the ramp’s innovative design, which includes garage doors that open as vehicles approach. “This makes it more secure for people parking their cars here,” Gilmour confirmed, noting that similar security features have been successfully implemented at the nearby Island Park ramp.
Construction of the NP parking ramp began in 2024, transforming what was once a surface lot into a multi-use facility. The overall project will also include 168 apartment units, 2,440 square feet of commercial space, and a 400-seat theater with classrooms, set for completion next year. This ambitious development is poised to further invigorate Fargo’s downtown, creating a vibrant hub for residents and visitors alike.
The Fargo City Commission approved a partnership with the Kilbourne Group to build and operate the parking garage three years ago. Funding for the ramp comes from a combination of $9 million in bonds, a $9 million loan from the Bank of North Dakota, and $2 million from parking ramp revenue.
The NP parking garage is the city’s fifth public parking facility and offers free parking after 5 p.m. daily and on weekends, making it an attractive option for visitors. Gilmour assured that residents of the new apartment complex will have guaranteed parking spots, further promoting community living and accessibility.
Rocky Schneider, executive director for the Downtown Community Partnership, expressed excitement over the ramp’s opening, stating, “This is betterment for the entire city.” The new facility will not only support local businesses and cultural events but also encourage exploration of downtown Fargo.
As Fargo continues to evolve, the opening of this state-of-the-art parking ramp signals a commitment to urban growth and community development, making it a pivotal moment for the city’s future. Stay tuned for more updates on this transformative project!
