Ja’Marr Chase will miss the upcoming game against the New England Patriots due to a one-game suspension upheld by a hearing officer. The suspension, a consequence of an incident involving Jalen Ramsey of the Pittsburgh Steelers, was confirmed on Tuesday, September 24, 2023. The decision was made by Jordy Nelson, a hearing officer appointed jointly by the NFL and the NFL Players Association.
The controversy unfolded during the fourth quarter of last Sunday’s game, where Chase was involved in a heated confrontation that led to his disciplinary action. Ramsey had grabbed Chase by the face mask and subsequently punched him, resulting in Ramsey’s ejection from the match. During this altercation, Chase reportedly spat on Ramsey, which the NFL deemed a violation of sportsmanship principles.
In response to the league’s announcement, Chase denied the accusation of spitting, even after the Cincinnati Bengals faced a substantial 34-12 defeat. Nevertheless, video footage from a local television station contradicted his claims, showing the incident during the game.
The NFL imposed the suspension under a rule designed to address actions that run counter to the expected standards of behavior in sports. As a result of the suspension, Chase will forfeit a significant portion of his salary, specifically at least $448,333.33 in base earnings, according to information from the NFL Players Association database.
Chase’s absence will be felt by the Bengals as they prepare to face the Patriots, underscoring the impact of disciplinary measures on team dynamics and performance. The Bengals will need to strategize without one of their key wide receivers as they aim to improve their standing in the league.
