URGENT UPDATE: The Lancaster Conservancy has just confirmed the acquisition of 180 acres in York County, set to become the Eagle View Nature Preserve. This significant development, announced earlier today, aims to protect a vital natural landscape adjacent to the Mason-Dixon Trail.
The newly designated preserve, located in Chanceford Township, features stunning views of the Susquehanna River and the surrounding counties. “From our first visit to Eagle View, we knew this place was special,” stated Fritz Schroeder, president and CEO of the Lancaster Conservancy. He emphasized the importance of preserving this area, which showcases a diverse array of hardwood forests and scenic vistas.
Eagle View Nature Preserve will offer visitors breathtaking sights, including the Conejohela Flats, a popular birding area, along with views of Highpoint County Park, the Wrightsville Bridge, and the towns of Columbia and Wrightsville. “Eagle View stands out as a quintessential, upland hardwood forest in the bucolic landscape of York’s river hills,” said Brandon Tennis, senior vice president of stewardship at the Conservancy. He highlighted the preserve’s vital role in maintaining the region’s natural biodiversity.
This acquisition falls within the parameters of the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Susquehanna Riverlands Conservation Landscape and is recognized as part of the federally designated Highlands Region. The conservancy is actively pursuing grants and donations to finance the ongoing development of the preserve, although the specific terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
As of now, the Eagle View Nature Preserve remains closed to the public as the conservancy finalizes its master planning process. The Lancaster Conservancy, a dedicated nonprofit land trust, manages over 50 nature preserves across Lancaster and York counties, continually striving to protect and enhance vital natural spaces.
The urgency of this acquisition cannot be overstated. With the growing threats to natural landscapes, the Lancaster Conservancy’s efforts are crucial for preserving wildlife habitats and enhancing outdoor recreational opportunities for future generations.
