350.org Urges Stronger COP30 Action on Fossil Fuels, Climate Finance

URGENT UPDATE: 350.org has just announced its concerns regarding the second draft decisions from COP30, revealing a critical gap in ambition for fossil fuel phaseout and climate finance. This warning comes as global momentum for a comprehensive fossil fuel roadmap accelerates, highlighting the urgent need for decisive action.

In a statement released earlier today, 350.org expressed that the current draft lacks the necessary measures to effectively close the climate ambition and finance gaps. Andreas Sieber, Associate Director of Policy and Campaigns at 350.org, emphasized that “this morning’s draft COP30 decisions fall far short of the giant leap needed to close the climate ambition gap.” He pointed out the absence of a robust plan to phase out fossil fuels, stating, “without a transition plan to end oil, gas, and coal we’re still fanning the flames.”

The organization acknowledged the Just Transition Mechanism as a significant multilateral achievement, yet it underscored that without a clear strategy to eliminate fossil fuels, progress remains stagnant. Fenton Lutunatabua, 350.org’s Pacific Team Lead, voiced the urgency of the situation, stressing, “We’re walking a fine line here between survival and climate catastrophe.” He called for immediate action, advocating for a COP30 outcome that reflects the dire needs of communities already affected by climate change.

Despite support from over 80 countries for a Transition Away from Fossil Fuels Roadmap, the draft continues to omit fossil fuel mentions. It relies on weak voluntary initiatives and vague plans for reducing oil, gas, and coal usage. The current financial proposals also fall short, lacking a clear responsibility for tripling adaptation finance, which is critical for vulnerable communities facing climate impacts.

The draft also failed to present a delivery plan for the new collective quantified goal (NCQG) and omitted references to ending inefficient fossil fuel subsidies. As Lutunatabua remarked, “without a fossil fuel phaseout plan and real finance, the world will still be adding fuel to the fire.”

350.org implores all parties involved to seize the growing global momentum and deliver a COP30 outcome that is just, equitable, and aligned with climate science and justice. They assert that a viable COP30 package must include comprehensive finance, adaptation strategies, and a clear fossil fuel transition roadmap. Without these essential components, the deal risks being ineffective in combating the climate crisis.

The urgency for a strong global commitment is palpable, with time running out for nations to act decisively. As COP30 continues in Belém, the world watches closely, hoping for a resolution that prioritizes our planet’s future and the well-being of affected communities.
