The holiday season has officially commenced at the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens, with the opening of the much-anticipated annual poinsettia exhibit. This vibrant showcase, featuring a stunning array of poinsettias, invites visitors to experience a festive atmosphere filled with color and warmth.
According to Marketing Manager Shaunna Mooney, the exhibit displays “hundreds and hundreds of poinsettias in all different kinds of colors, varieties, and shapes.” She described the scene as “magical,” emphasizing the unique experience it offers amidst the winter chill. The exhibit is a significant undertaking for the Gardens, requiring extensive collaboration among staff and volunteers. “Our horticulture team does an incredible job putting together these exhibits and displays,” Mooney noted.
The exhibit thrives within the conservatory, where conditions mimic the native climate of the plants. “The poinsettias do a great job in here, especially where it’s warm,” Mooney explained, highlighting their origins in Mexico. Visitors can expect to encounter unique hues not commonly found in stores, including shades of pink, orange, and peach. “You might not see these until you come here to the poinsettia exhibit,” she added.
The poinsettia exhibit remains a cherished tradition for many in Western New York. Mooney underscored its importance as a gathering place for families and couples during the holiday season. “People love to come and visit every holiday season to bring their families, bring a date, come and do something relaxing that you wouldn’t otherwise do in the winter,” she said.
In addition to the main exhibit, several holiday events are scheduled throughout its run. “Poinsettias After Dark” features evening hours, allowing guests to enjoy the display in a more intimate setting. There will also be visits from Santa and two evenings dedicated to a new mini-golf experience set up among the poinsettias.
A new adults-only event called Bricks and Brews will allow guests to create custom Lego models of the Botanical Gardens’ conservatory while enjoying beverages. This initiative aims to blend creativity with relaxation, catering to a diverse audience.
Ticket information and details about the events can be found on the official website at buffalogardens.com. As the exhibit continues through December 2023, it promises to be a highlight of the holiday season for residents and visitors alike, bringing a touch of warmth and joy during the winter months.
