Holiday Fund Offers Hope to Families in Need This Season

The Christmas Fund, organized by the Zonta Club of Kauai, aims to provide assistance to families and individuals facing significant challenges during the holiday season. Through December 24, The Garden Island features stories of those in need, encouraging community support to brighten their celebrations and ease their burdens.

Betty, a woman who has triumphed over homelessness and addiction, is one of the individuals seeking help this holiday season. After securing stable housing earlier this year, she is eager to reconnect with her passion for baking. Betty is requesting baking pans and cookware to support her recovery and overall well-being. Her story exemplifies the resilience and determination that many individuals demonstrate as they work to rebuild their lives.

Another individual, Billy Echo, is a 21-year-old living in Kapaa with his extended family. Originally from the Marshall Islands, Billy faces daily challenges due to his intellectual disability and requires constant supervision for his seizures. His family seeks financial assistance to help cover daily living expenses, highlighting the ongoing struggles families face even during festive times.

Malu Soon is a 30-year-old man with autism and nutritional needs, living independently with a caregiver. His family is requesting help with his living expenses, emphasizing the importance of community support in fostering independence for individuals with disabilities.

The stories of individuals like Alex, an elderly man who recently transitioned from homelessness to stable housing, reflect the ongoing struggle many face even after securing a roof over their heads. Alex appreciates gift cards to purchase essential personal items, which would greatly enhance his quality of life.

Young couple Christopher and Catelyn, along with their son, Chad, are also navigating the challenges of starting a new life together. As they settle into permanent housing, they seek essential household items like kitchen supplies and blankets to create a welcoming environment for their family.

The family of three adults—Daniel, David, and Divina—requires support due to mounting medical bills and other financial strains. They are requesting gift cards for necessities like food and laundry supplies, demonstrating the diverse challenges faced by families in the community.

Additional stories include those of Eddie, who is rebuilding his life after losing his father earlier this year, and Gerald, who struggles to cover his living expenses despite working limited hours. Both men are seeking gift cards to help with daily needs, underscoring the importance of community contributions.

Lastly, Haven and Ikaika are two individuals committed to overcoming their adversities with resilience. Haven seeks colorful beddings and curtains to brighten her living space, while Ikaika is looking for gift cards for food to meet his essential needs.

The Zonta Club ensures that all donations directly benefit those in need, with no administrative costs involved. Community members are encouraged to contribute, whether through fundraising or direct donations. Those who donate $200 or more will have their photographs published in The Garden Island, further promoting the spirit of giving.

Donations can be made through the Zonta Club’s website, Zonta-Kauai.org, or by sending checks to The Zonta Club of Kauai Foundation, P.O. Box 3032, Lihue, HI 96766. Together, the community can make a meaningful difference this holiday season for those who need it most.
