Pierce County Invests $857,250 in Wilkeson Eco-Tourism Boost

UPDATE: Just announced, the Pierce County Council has allocated $857,250 to significantly enhance eco-tourism and conservation efforts in Wilkeson, a town near Mount Rainier. This funding, confirmed on October 21, 2023, comes in response to the recent closure of the Fairfax Bridge, which has impacted local access and tourism.

County Executive Ryan Mello stated, “This investment expands public access to our region’s incredible natural beauty while supporting local economic opportunities vital to the Wilkeson community.” The project aims to expand Coke Oven Park and conserve adjacent natural lands, ensuring the preservation of the Wilkeson Creek ecosystem.

The ambitious plans include the development of new hiking trails, a historic mining tour, and prospects for campsites across 139 newly acquired acres. These enhancements are designed not only to boost community engagement with nature but also to stabilize and invigorate the local economy.

Mayor-elect Jayme Peloli, spearheading the Wilkeson’s Way Forward campaign, emphasized the project’s dual focus on recreation and education, stating, “Through this investment, we’re creating a space where people can connect with nature and explore Wilkeson’s history.” This initiative reflects the town’s commitment to improving outdoor areas and fostering community spirit.

The funding is partly sourced from the Pierce County Conservation Futures, a program dedicated to preserving land for wildlife, recreation, and community green space. The investments made today are expected to have lasting impacts on the region, drawing visitors and enhancing the quality of life for residents.

This development marks a crucial step in revitalizing Wilkeson, encouraging outdoor exploration and appreciation of the area’s rich history. As plans unfold, community members and nature enthusiasts alike are urged to stay informed about upcoming events and opportunities to engage with the new facilities.
