UPDATE: Ohio REACH is transforming the futures of former foster youth in Ohio, significantly boosting their access to higher education. This initiative has already supported nearly 400 students across 57 colleges and universities, paving the way for success stories like that of Brooke Winstead, who graduated from the University of Cincinnati after aging out of the foster system.
Winstead credits Ohio REACH with being instrumental in her academic journey, stating, “Not having parents made me more of a hungry person to go after my goals.” Her experience highlights the critical role of support networks for foster alumni, especially as new data reveals that more than 300,000 children enter foster care in the U.S. each year.
As Ohio REACH expands, Susan Ballard, director at the Ohio Children’s Alliance, confirmed that the program is actively improving retention rates for students linked to foster care. This urgent support is vital, as many young adults face unexpected challenges related to housing and transportation costs. In response, Ohio REACH has launched an emergency fund fundraiser aimed at alleviating these financial burdens.
Compounding the challenges for foster youth, recent research from the University of Cincinnati reveals a nationwide shortage of foster homes. Catelyn Smeyne, an assistant professor, emphasizes that current foster caregivers often lack community support and trauma-informed training. “Figuring out how to do that through policy, regulations, better research, better training and better supports…is urgent,” Smeyne stated, underscoring the immediate need for systemic reform in the foster care system.
This comprehensive approach by Ohio REACH not only directly benefits students but also addresses the broader spectrum of challenges faced by foster care-involved individuals. The initiative aims to refine existing support networks, ensuring that more foster youth can confidently pursue higher education and beyond.
As Ohio REACH continues to develop, it is poised to play a pivotal role in fostering successful transitions from foster care to higher education, embodying a hope for a brighter future for many young adults. With the ongoing challenges in the foster care system, the urgency for action and substantial change is clear. This initiative is an important step towards creating a more robust support system for those who have faced significant obstacles in their educational journeys.
Stay tuned as Ohio REACH progresses in its mission to empower former foster youth, ensuring they have the tools and resources needed to thrive in college and beyond.
