The FBI has requested interviews with several Democratic lawmakers who recently urged servicemembers to refuse illegal orders, escalating tensions surrounding comments made in a video last week. This call for interviews follows a series of accusations from President Donald Trump, who has publicly demanded that these members of Congress face legal repercussions for their statements.
In the video, which featured two senators and four House members—all veterans of the military or intelligence community—lawmakers emphasized the responsibility of servicemembers to disregard any orders they deem unlawful. Although they did not specify any particular orders, the message was a clear warning against unlawful directives. On March 19, 2024, the four House members confirmed that the House sergeant at arms had been contacted by the FBI regarding the interviews.
Lawmakers Push Back Against Administration Pressure
In their response, the four House members expressed their determination not to be intimidated, stating that they would not voluntarily participate in interviews with the agency. “President Trump is using the FBI as a tool to intimidate and harass members of Congress,” they said in a joint statement. They also noted that the Senate sergeant at arms had received similar inquiries.
“No amount of intimidation or harassment will ever stop us from doing our jobs and honoring our Constitution,” they added, reinforcing their commitment to their oaths of office. The video featured Senator Mark Kelly, a retired Navy captain, and Senator Elissa Slotkin, a retired CIA officer. Both senators have also defended their positions in the face of the President’s criticism.
Currently, Senator Kelly is under investigation by the Department of Defense for his remarks in the video, raising the potential for him to be recalled to active duty for a court-martial. The Defense Department stated, “In accordance with the Uniform Code of Military Justice and other applicable regulations, a thorough review of these allegations has been initiated to determine further actions.”
Political Fallout and Reactions
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has labeled the lawmakers in the video as the “Seditious Six,” a term that reflects the administration’s stance following Trump’s claims of sedition against them. Hegseth commented on social media, stating that vague rhetoric can undermine trust within military ranks and disrupt the chain of command.
The situation has drawn the attention of both Democrats and civil libertarians, who have condemned the perceived intimidation tactics against the lawmakers. Former Congressman Justin Amash, who left the Republican Party to join the Libertarian movement, called for Hegseth’s impeachment, arguing that the Secretary’s actions mislead the public regarding constitutional rights.
“Even if it were politically motivated, it would not be unlawful to make such a video,” Amash stated, criticizing the Defense Secretary for his approach to the lawmakers’ statements.
This unfolding situation highlights the increasing friction between the Trump administration and certain congressional members, raising questions about the implications for military personnel and the legislative process. As the FBI continues its inquiries, the responses from both the lawmakers involved and the administration will likely shape future discussions on the balance of power and the responsibilities of elected officials.
