URGENT UPDATE: As families in San Antonio prepare for Thanksgiving, the San Antonio Fire Department (SAFD) is urgently warning about kitchen safety. Officials say many holiday cooking accidents are both predictable and preventable. “A lot of times the fires we see are due to unattended cooking in the kitchen,” said Joe Arrington, SAFD public information officer.
With Thanksgiving just around the corner, it’s crucial to stay vigilant. Arrington highlights that common hazards include pots left unattended and items accidentally knocked over. Local residents are taking precautions, with families like Angela and Robert Saldana dividing kitchen responsibilities to minimize chaos. “My dad does the turkey, my mother does the stuffing, and everyone kind of has their own part, so nobody crosses that line,” Robert emphasized.
In light of safety concerns, Happie Wedzina has invested in a fire blanket for emergencies, while Laurie Zapata cautioned against the dangers of deep-frying turkeys at home. “Don’t ever deep fry a turkey anywhere. I’m terrified of that happening,” she said, echoing the sentiments of many safety-conscious cooks.
If you plan to deep fry your turkey this year, SAFD advises ensuring it is completely thawed and dry before placing it in hot oil. “Never leave it unattended,” Arrington warns. “Keep kids and pets away, and have a fire extinguisher handy. Do not use water on a grease fire.”
While SAFD reports few incidents related to turkey frying in San Antonio, they advise caution nonetheless. “We kind of know how to fry things here,” Arrington noted, “but it’s still important to be safe.”
Whether you are hosting Thanksgiving for the first time or are a seasoned cook, safety should remain a top priority. “Everyone just wants to make sure that you stay safe, especially with knives and when kids are around,” Robert Saldana stated.
In the hustle and bustle of Thanksgiving preparations, Arrington urges everyone to slow down and stay aware of what’s cooking. “We want everyone to enjoy a great Thanksgiving with their loved ones, but take that second to remember what’s on the stove and be safe.”
