Urgent Search for Hit-and-Run Driver After Woman Killed

URGENT UPDATE: Philadelphia police are actively searching for the hit-and-run driver responsible for the tragic death of 48-year-old Meaza Brown, who was struck while walking to work on November 20, 2023. As her family and friends mourn, the community rallies for justice.

The incident occurred in the University City neighborhood on the 3300 block of Market Street, where Brown, a devoted mother of three and employee at the University of Pennsylvania, was in a crosswalk alongside her coworkers. Witnesses say the suspect sped through a red light, colliding with Brown before fleeing the scene.

Blen Ashenafi, Brown’s niece, expressed the profound loss, stating, “Meaza was one of the kindest people I’ve ever met.” Her coworkers remember her as a vibrant presence, with Felicia Boyd emphasizing, “Everybody is going to remember that smile. Just brightens up the whole place.”

Brown, who was born in Ethiopia and had made South Philadelphia her home, leaves behind her husband of 23 years, Kevin Brown, and their two teenage daughters, Nicole and Dena. Eugene Brown, her brother-in-law, stated, “If you see them, they look just like her. They are her, and they’re going to carry on her legacy.”

The community is grappling with this devastating loss. “This is a really tough loss for us, but we’re handling it as a community, and we’re staying strong,” Ashenafi added. Loved ones describe her as a pillar in both her family and workplace, dedicated to supporting those around her.

As the investigation continues, detectives have recovered the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run, located about a mile from the incident site. While no arrests have been made yet, police report they have potential leads in the case.

In light of this tragedy, donations are being collected to help cover funeral expenses and provide financial support for Brown’s family. The emotional impact of her loss resonates deeply within the community, as many reflect on how she changed their lives for the better.

Authorities urge anyone with information to come forward as they work tirelessly to bring the responsible party to justice. “I was in shock,” Boyd recalled. “I just didn’t believe, like, someone is coming to work, and something tragic like that to happen, and for the person not to stop.”

As the search for the driver intensifies, the community stands united in remembrance of Meaza Brown, whose spirit and kindness will not be forgotten.
