Jack Moynihan Receives Lynnfield’s Townsend Award for Service

UPDATE: Jack Moynihan, a long-standing community leader and co-owner of Moynihan Lumber, was honored with the prestigious Daniel Townsend Award for Excellence by the Lynnfield Select Board on October 24, 2023. This award recognizes his decades of selfless service to the town of Lynnfield, Massachusetts, reflecting his deep commitment to volunteerism.

During a recent meeting, Board Chair Phil Crawford emphasized that the Townsend Award is conferred upon a resident who demonstrates “exemplary dedication and commitment” to the community. “We really look for people who have made decades of contributions… Jack Moynihan really does personify what the award is about,” Crawford stated, highlighting the significant role Moynihan plays in Lynnfield.

Former Select Board Chair Chris Barrett, who nominated Moynihan, praised him for his extensive contributions spanning over 40 years. He described Moynihan as a true community leader who has made “remarkable success in his professional life” while consistently giving back to the town.

“Jack’s contributions to our community span over multiple decades,” Barrett noted. “He embodies the very essence of what it means to be a true community leader.”

Moynihan’s influence began with his involvement in the Couple’s Club, where he built lasting friendships with fellow community advocates. His leadership roles include serving as Chair of the Comprehensive Housing and Planning Committee, where he developed a “roadmap” for prospective homeowners navigating town processes.

His impactful projects include spearheading the Partridge Island project, acquiring the Lynnfield Center Golf Course, and overseeing the development of housing units on Main Street. Barrett highlighted Moynihan’s pivotal role on the finance committee, guiding Lynnfield through challenging economic times and ensuring fiscal stability.

In addition to these endeavors, Moynihan has been instrumental in founding Lynnfield’s middle school and expanding other educational institutions. He also played a key role in the development of MarketStreet, a prominent shopping and dining destination.

His commitment to youth is evident through the North Shore Student-Athlete Award, sponsored by Moynihan Lumber, which recognizes promising young athletes each month. Awardees are then eligible for the coveted Student-Athlete of the Year scholarship.

In a heartfelt acceptance speech, Moynihan expressed gratitude to the Board, Barrett for the nomination, and his family for their unwavering support. “In all the roles I have been fortunate to take part in, there is one theme that runs through it all: service above self,” he stated, underscoring the essence of his community commitment.

This recognition marks a significant moment for both Moynihan and the town of Lynnfield, as it honors a legacy of dedication to community service. As residents celebrate this achievement, attention turns to how Moynihan will continue to inspire future generations of community leaders.
