Congressman Robert Aderholt, representing Alabama’s 4th Congressional District, announced on January 23, 2026, that he has secured $2.5 million in federal funding for the Lions’ Village project at Wallace State Community College in Hanceville. This funding is part of the appropriations bill for Fiscal Year 2026, which has successfully passed the U.S. House of Representatives.
The Lions’ Village project aims to construct a tiny home village that will provide micro-dwellings specifically designed for student families. Additionally, the project includes an on-campus childcare facility, addressing critical needs for affordable housing and childcare among students.
In his announcement, Aderholt emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “Wallace State plays a vital role in preparing Alabama’s workforce and expanding opportunity for families across our region.” He added that investing in affordable housing and childcare is essential for supporting student parents in completing their education and improving their futures.
Dr. Vicki Karolewics, President of Wallace State Community College, expressed her gratitude for the federal support. She remarked, “At Wallace State, our mission is to remove every possible barrier to student success, and for many of our students, the two greatest hurdles are affordable housing and accessible childcare.” Dr. Karolewics described the funding as a transformative opportunity, creating a holistic support system for student families.
According to Aderholt’s office, the Lions’ Village project is one of several community investments secured for the district through the Fiscal Year 2026 appropriations process. In total, more than $56 million has been allocated for various local projects aimed at enhancing education, workforce development, infrastructure, and economic opportunity.
The appropriations package has now moved to the U.S. Senate for final approval. If ratified, this funding will significantly impact the community, bolstering support for student families and enabling a pathway for academic success at Wallace State Community College.
