Amtrak has successfully reintroduced its Mardi Gras Rail Service, facilitating day trips to New Orleans since August 18, 2023. This service marks a significant return to the Gulf Coast nearly 20 years after operations were suspended due to Hurricane Katrina. Passengers can now enjoy a convenient and enjoyable journey to the vibrant city, as demonstrated by local FOX 10 reporter Lee Peck during a recent trip.
Peck embarked on the early morning train at 6:30 a.m., starting from the downtown train depot. Accompanied by neighbors Marty and Chris Henken, they quickly settled into their seats and explored the café car, which offers a selection of refreshments for travelers. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement as fellow passengers, including viewer Nancy Clark from Mobile, shared their anticipation for the day ahead. “I’ve always wanted to ride on a train. And it’s a bucket list!” Clark expressed.
As the train made four stops in Mississippi, it became increasingly clear that interest in the service was high, with every seat filled. Upon arrival in New Orleans shortly after 10:00 a.m., the iconic New Orleans Superdome signaled the end of their journey, paving the way for exploration.
Exploring the Big Easy
Once in New Orleans, passengers immersed themselves in the rich culture and history the city offers. They visited the bustling Riverwalk and the famed French Market, searching for delightful dining options. The group eventually made their way to the historic Hotel Monteleone, which was adorned with festive Christmas decorations.
At the Carousel Bar inside the hotel, they enjoyed afternoon cocktails while celebrating the occasion. Fellow passengers, Mellissa and Jay Fraiser, who joined the train in Pascagoula, were also enjoying their ride. Celebrating eight years of marriage, Mellissa shared her initial concerns about the comfort of train travel. “Honestly, I was worried about the comfort of the whole thing. I was impressed by the seating. Way more comfortable than a plane,” she remarked.
The Fraisers voiced their satisfaction with the experience, declaring their intention to travel by Amtrak again. “I’ll never drive again. Hop on the Amtrak. You can either do a day trip or stay for the night,” Mellissa noted, appreciating the flexibility the service offers.
Returning Home
The group made a memorable stop at Jackson Square, where the weather was perfect for sightseeing. The ease of travel provided by Amtrak allowed passengers to enjoy their day without the stress of driving. “Now that they’re back… I know for sure that we’ll take it again. It’s been fun,” Marty Henken said, reflecting on the enjoyable experience.
The return of Amtrak’s Mardi Gras Rail Service has not only revitalized travel options to New Orleans but has also rekindled a love for train travel among many. With its blend of comfort, convenience, and cultural immersion, this service is poised to become a popular choice for both locals and tourists alike. The success of this initiative indicates a promising future for rail travel along the Gulf Coast, bringing more visitors to experience the unique charm of New Orleans.
