The Supreme Court of Singapore and the Supreme People’s Court of China have deepened their judicial ties during the Ninth Singapore-China Legal and Judicial Roundtable held in Shenzhen on November 18, 2025. This significant event, co-chaired by Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon of Singapore and Chief Justice Zhang Jun of China, underscores the two nations’ commitment to enhancing bilateral judicial cooperation.
The Roundtable, which took place over two days from November 17 to 18, 2025, served as a platform for exchanging ideas and experiences between the two judiciaries. It was initiated in 2017 and has since become an annual event, with each country alternating as host. This year’s agenda featured a range of contemporary issues pertinent to the administration of justice, showcasing the collaborative spirit of the two courts.
A highlight of the discussions included presentations on various critical topics. Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon addressed the importance of Judicial Education and the Comprehensive Training and Development of Judges. Justice Steven Chong contributed insights on the judiciary’s role in supporting the arbitral process in international arbitration. Additionally, Justice See Kee Oon discussed the integration of Artificial Intelligence into judicial practices, emphasizing its responsible use to strengthen the administration of justice. Justice Teh Hwee Hwee rounded out the agenda by focusing on achieving optimal outcomes in family justice.
During the event, Chief Justice Menon delivered both the opening and closing remarks, reinforcing the collaborative goals of the Roundtable. The Singapore delegation also engaged in extensive site visits aimed at gaining practical insights into the operations of Chinese courts. Their itinerary included visits to notable institutions such as the Shenzhen Intermediate People’s Court, the Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration, and the China International Commercial Court.
This initiative not only strengthens legal ties but also facilitates a deeper understanding of differing judicial systems, fostering a mutual learning environment.
