Cape Town Opera Launches ‘Opera Blocks: Under the Sea’ for Kids

Cape Town Opera has unveiled an exciting new initiative called “Opera Blocks: Under the Sea,” aimed at introducing babies and toddlers aged 0 to 5 to the world of opera. The immersive theatrical experience will be showcased at various libraries across Cape Town from March 26 to March 31, 2026.

The production, which lasts for approximately 45 minutes, is written, choreographed, and directed by Elizma Badenhorst. It features performances by members of Cape Town Opera’s Judith Neilson Young Artist Programme and Vocal Ensemble, with accompaniment provided by Nathan Lewis on keyboard. “Opera Blocks: Under the Sea” blends live singing with storytelling, movement, and tactile design, all within a relaxed, child-friendly atmosphere.

Performance Schedule and Locations

The series of performances will commence at the Gugulethu Library on March 26, followed by the Bellville Library on March 27, the Retreat Library on March 28, the Milnerton Library on March 30, and the Sea Point Library on March 31. All shows will begin at 13:00, allowing ample opportunity for families to enjoy this unique experience.

In addition to the library performances, there will be extra showings at the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees (KKNK) from April 1 to April 3, 2026. This festival is renowned for celebrating the arts and will provide an excellent platform for the production to reach a wider audience.

This initiative reflects Cape Town Opera’s commitment to engaging younger audiences and fostering an appreciation for the arts from an early age. By creating an interactive environment that encourages participation, “Opera Blocks: Under the Sea” aims to make opera accessible and enjoyable for children and their families.

As the event approaches, anticipation is building among parents and caregivers eager to introduce their little ones to the joys of opera through this innovative and entertaining format.
