Known for his extravagant decorations, Novak has captivated audiences globally with his elaborate setups, which go beyond traditional Halloween themes.
Novak’s fascination with creating these immersive scenes began nearly six months ago. His latest concept, inspired by a long-held idea of a crashed helicopter, evolved into the striking image of an upside-down truck. “Halloween is an excuse for me to do crazy things outside,” Novak explained, emphasizing that his displays are more about artistry than the holiday itself.
Planning for this year’s display took considerable effort, involving meticulous sketches and 3D renderings using a program called Blender. Novak has spent over 300 hours designing and building the installation, which includes custom animatronics and props. “Once I decide how to get my head around the material, I’m unstoppable,” he stated, highlighting his dedication to detail and realism.
The centerpiece of this year’s display is a 1992 Nissan truck, which Novak acquired after a social media fundraising campaign. Donations poured in from supporters around the world, including a significant contribution of $1,000 from a fan in Norway. This support enabled Novak to transform the truck into a narrative-driven piece, complete with lighting effects to simulate flames.
In his creative process, Novak often draws from his childhood experiences of dismantling objects. “I have stacks of notebooks full of random ideas,” he said. His partner, Rose Cobey, who is also a skydiver, influences his designs, steering them away from overly gruesome elements. This year, the display features a storyline involving biohazard materials, with zombies in hazmat suits, providing a conceptual framework for the scene.
Novak’s previous displays have included various characters and themes, and this year is no different. He has incorporated references to past creations, such as scattered gory body parts and characters inspired by classic films. “There’s a narrative. If they were infected, there’s a reason for it,” he said, emphasizing the importance of authenticity in his work.
As the Halloween season approaches, Novak continues to make adjustments and enhancements to his creation, including adding more lasers and interactive elements. “I might as well let the world have it instead of it collecting dust in my garage,” he remarked, contemplating future projects.
Looking ahead, Novak envisions even more ambitious displays. “Next year, I can have a Halloween display with Terminator robots and laser tag,” he mused. His innovative approach and commitment to quality ensure that his Halloween displays remain a highlight for the community and beyond.
