Nintendo has introduced exciting enhancements to its gaming experience with the release of the new Switch 2 Pro Controller, particularly the inclusion of two remappable back buttons, known as the GL and GR buttons. These features allow gamers to customize their gameplay by assigning frequently used actions to more ergonomic positions, ultimately reducing thumb strain and enhancing input efficiency during intense gaming sessions.
The GL and GR buttons are designed to be fully remappable, marking the first time Nintendo has incorporated such functionality into one of its first-party controllers. Players can easily program these buttons while actively engaged in a game, providing a seamless integration into the gaming experience. To customize the controller, users simply hold the HOME button during gameplay, which opens the Quick Settings menu on the Switch 2.
Once in the Quick Settings menu, players can select either the GL or GR button and choose the desired action to assign. This innovative system saves the button assignments on a per-user, per-game basis. Consequently, when players switch games, the controller automatically adjusts to the last used settings for that specific title, eliminating the need for constant reconfiguration.
Interestingly, the GL and GR buttons can also be mapped to system-level functions, such as taking screenshots, providing even more versatility. However, it is important to note that these buttons cannot be configured outside of a game. Unlike other gaming consoles that offer remapping options through a main menu, the Switch 2 Pro Controller requires users to set up the back buttons exclusively through the Quick Settings while in-game. This design choice limits their use for navigating the system interface.
Nintendo has also extended this convenient feature to the new Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip, which includes smaller versions of the GL and GR buttons, functioning in the same way as those on the Pro Controller. While the concept of rear buttons is not new to gaming hardware, their presence in Nintendo’s latest controller adds an exciting element to the overall gaming experience.
This innovative approach by Nintendo reflects their commitment to enhancing player comfort and gameplay efficiency. As gamers continue to explore the capabilities of the Switch 2 Pro Controller, the GL and GR buttons are likely to become essential tools for optimized gaming performance.
