Elton John Transforms Kneecaps into Unique Jewelry After Surgery

Elton John has turned a significant health challenge into a remarkable fashion statement by transforming his kneecaps into jewelry following a double knee replacement in 2024. In a revealing documentary released last year, the iconic musician shared that after having his kneecaps removed, he requested to keep them, much to the surprise of his surgeon.

John recounted, “When I had my kneecaps removed, the left one first and then the right, I asked my surgeon if I could keep the kneecaps.” His desire led him to collaborate with renowned jewelry designer Theo Fennell, who detailed the intricate process involved in converting bone into wearable art.

From Surgery to Statement Piece

Fennell explained that the transformation process required careful preparation. He stated, “We had to bake them to dry them out. Then they get raw like pumice stone; they’re very porous, and so we had to paint them with acetate and then just polish them up.” The outcome is a striking gold-framed necklace featuring a piece of John’s right kneecap, which he proudly showcased, saying, “My right kneecap. That’s my right patella. My surgeon said I had the worst knees he’s ever operated on.”

The musician compared the appearance of his kneecap to an ancient Egyptian artifact, remarking, “That hole was actually in my kneecap. It looks a bit like an old artifact from Egypt.” He expressed admiration for Fennell’s craftsmanship, highlighting that the necklace chain was also made from bones, and confidently declared, “I honestly think these are timeless pieces that will last for centuries.”

Fennell humorously added, “I just thought it would be more fun to have a necklace that reflected the thing at the end of it.” Inscribed on the back of the necklace is a Latin phrase that translates to: “I will no longer bow to any man,” with Fennell quipping, “Which of course you can’t do with a kneecap missing.”

Health Challenges and Resilience

Elton John has openly discussed his health issues, including his surgeries and chronic conditions, during various appearances. At the premiere of his biopic, It’s Never Too Late, he revealed, “I don’t have tonsils, adenoids or an appendix. I don’t have a prostate. I don’t have a right hip or a left knee or a right knee.” He added, “In fact, the only thing left to me is my left hip. But I’m still here. And I can’t thank you [enough], you’re the people that made me.”

In 2013, John faced a health scare that forced him to postpone tour dates due to appendicitis. His spokesperson noted his “superhuman efforts” to perform despite feeling unwell. Following this, he underwent surgery to have his appendix removed. Additionally, since the early 2000s, he has managed Type 2 diabetes, which has significantly altered his lifestyle and dietary habits.

John once shared, “I can have an apple, I can eat a bit of melon. As long as you’re sensible about it, it doesn’t shoot your blood sugar up. But what I crave is chocolate and ice cream; I can’t have any ice cream.”

In 2017, he received a diagnosis of prostate cancer and opted for surgery over chemotherapy, aiming to lessen the emotional burden on his loved ones. Following the procedure, he experienced severe complications that nearly proved fatal. In his autobiography, Me, Elton, he disclosed that he was “24 hours from death” due to a rare infection. He recounted a moment of desperation: “In the hospital, alone at the dead of night, I’d prayed: please don’t let me die, please let me see my kids again, please give me a little longer.”

Elton John’s journey through health challenges and his creative transformation of personal medical history into art reflect both resilience and a unique perspective on life. His new necklace not only serves as a fashionable accessory but also as a testament to his enduring spirit.
