HGTV Cancels Rehab Addict Following Host’s Racial Slur Controversy

HGTV has canceled the home renovation series Rehab Addict after host Nicole Curtis was found using a racial slur during filming. The decision came swiftly following the release of behind-the-scenes footage that showed Curtis using the offensive language, leading to public outcry and subsequent action by the network.

In a statement issued to Variety, HGTV expressed its disapproval, stating, “HGTV was recently made aware of an offensive racial comment made during the filming of Rehab Addict. Not only is language like this hurtful and disappointing to our viewers, partners, and employees – it does not align with the values of HGTV. Accordingly, we have removed the series from all HGTV platforms.” The network emphasized its commitment to promoting a culture of respect and inclusion across its content and workplace.

The controversy arose when RadarOnline published footage depicting Curtis in a moment of frustration while working on a project, during which she used a racial slur. The backlash was immediate, prompting HGTV to take decisive action against the show. Curtis had previously announced plans to shelve the remaining episodes of Season 9, which had aired its first two episodes in July 2025, with a planned return on February 12, 2025. Those plans were ultimately scrapped following the incident.

In her response to the situation, Curtis issued a statement to TMZ, saying, “I want to be clear: the word in question is wrong and not part of my vocabulary and never has been, and I apologize to everyone.” She further added, “I’m grateful for the 15-year journey we’ve shared. It’s been a meaningful chapter, but my focus isn’t on my career. My focus, at this moment is rightfully on my relationships, and my community – the people who truly know my character and where my heart is.”

Originally airing on the DIY Network before transitioning to HGTV in 2014, Rehab Addict showcased Curtis’s efforts to restore old homes, garnering a significant following over the years. The show’s abrupt cancellation marks a significant moment in the ongoing discussions about race and accountability in the entertainment industry.

As the situation unfolds, the focus remains on the implications for both Curtis and HGTV, and how this incident may influence future programming choices by networks striving to uphold community standards.
