The annual Holiday Nerd Market welcomed an enthusiastic crowd of gamers, artists, and pop culture fans to the Aloft Hotel in Jacksonville on November 25, 2023. Coinciding with Small Business Saturday, the event transformed the downtown venue into a vibrant hub filled with collectibles, food stalls, and costumed attendees celebrating their shared passions.
Organizers emphasized that the market offers more than just shopping; it serves as a gathering point for individuals who share niche interests. Volunteer Nariah Fernandez articulated the event’s mission, stating, “The Holiday Nerd Market is just about community. It’s about being in one space, being together, and diving into that heart of the community.” This sentiment resonated with many attendees, highlighting the social aspect of the event.
Among the visitors, Luna-Freya Dougherty and her family expressed how the market showcases the local commitment to niche hobbies. “It’s a great time to actually see how much the local community cares about some of these more nerdy and specialized hobbies,” she explained, noting the event’s role in fostering community bonds.
Vendors displayed a wide array of handmade and specialty items, catering to a diverse audience. Gabriela Alayon, a vendor from GiGi Creativity, showcased her hand-painted products, including a custom cup that has become particularly popular this year. “I love to create and hand-paint everything. But this one is the most popular for this year. It takes me a while to make just one cup because I need to make everything from scratch, then wait two weeks until it’s right,” Alayon shared.
The market also highlighted the intersection of craftsmanship and technology. Brandon David, selling under the name Captain Bravo, presented a selection of 3D-printed figures and Pokémon collectibles. He expressed excitement about his creations, stating, “I could do stuff like this. Like, this is me. Hanging out with my six favorite Pokémon. And I have a 3D printer now, I can control the size of everything I’m making.”
As the Holiday Nerd Market continues over the weekend, it is expected to attract even more visitors, further enhancing the sense of community and support for local artisans and creators. The event serves as a reminder of the importance of fostering local culture and creativity, particularly during the holiday season.
In addition to the market, the Jacksonville area has been abuzz with various holiday festivities, including the recently opened outdoor ice skating rink, offering families additional seasonal activities. With a growing emphasis on supporting local businesses, events like the Holiday Nerd Market are critical in promoting a vibrant community spirit.
