Local Jazz Trio Brings Holiday Cheer with Classic Performance

A local jazz trio will perform the beloved soundtrack of the 1965 television special “A Charlie Brown Christmas” on December 11, 2023. The event, featuring Chuck Hank on bass, Alec Mayes on drums, and Clarke Reid on piano, will take place at the iNDIGO ROOM located in iAM Music, 1315 Main Ave. #207. Tickets are available for $20 in advance or $22 at the door.

The performance promises to breathe new life into the classic music composed by Vince Guaraldi. Each member of the trio expressed their excitement about the project, noting its significance in their musical journeys. Hank mentioned that the idea to cover the album stemmed from conversations about seasonal performances. “We’ve always loved it, so the idea kind of evolved,” he said. “We’re just going to learn all the songs from the album.”

Hank, Mayes, and Reid aim to delve into the nuances of Guaraldi’s work, seeking to replicate the special elements that have made the soundtrack a lasting favorite. “When you really try to study a piece of music and get into the nuances of it… you’re trying to play all of these little parts that make it so special,” Hank added.

The concert will also feature vocalist Dana Ariel for select songs, enhancing the festive atmosphere with her interpretations of classic melodies. The trio’s goal is not just to perform but to evoke the nostalgia that accompanies the original tunes. “Hopefully, it’s going to give you those same feelings as when you first heard that record,” Hank said.

Celebrating a Timeless Classic

The Vince Guaraldi Trio created a swinging collection of songs that captures the essence of Christmas while showcasing the improvisational spirit of jazz. Iconic tracks such as “Linus and Lucy” exemplify how Guaraldi infused festive melodies with a distinct jazz groove. The trio plans to honor this legacy by adding their unique touch to the performance.

Hank elaborated on the variety within the music, explaining that while they will perform familiar holiday favorites, they will also incorporate jazz elements. “It’s got ‘Hark, the Herald Angels Sing,’ and one called ‘My Little Drum.’ They paid tribute to these amazing melodies while also swinging it,” he said.

The performance is not only an opportunity for the musicians to develop their skills but also a chance for the audience to reconnect with treasured memories. “If you were born between 1940 and now, this animated special and its accompanying soundtrack is universal viewing and listening,” Hank remarked.

Engaging the Community

The concert at the iNDIGO ROOM is part of a broader effort by local musicians to engage with the community during the holiday season. The trio hopes to bring together audiences of all ages, inviting them to share in the joy and nostalgia of the music that has become synonymous with Christmas celebrations.

The event promises to be a delightful experience for both jazz enthusiasts and fans of the Peanuts franchise. With tickets set at affordable prices, it provides a wonderful opportunity to enjoy live music in a festive setting.
