The Na Makua Invitational Christmas Gift Fair is set to take place on December 8 and 9, 2023, at the Edith Kanaka‘ole Multi-Purpose Stadium in Hilo, Hawaii. The fair will run from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. This event invites the public to celebrate the holiday season with a showcase of Hawaii’s top artisans and producers of handmade gifts.
Organized by Nelson and Kainoa Makua of Na Makua Hawaiian Designs, the fair will feature a diverse collection of unique gift items. Vendors from the Big Island, as well as Oahu, Maui, and Kauai, will present an array of products including jewelry, Christmas decorations, bags and totes, designer apparel, local wood products, and gourmet foods.
Among the local designers participating are WahineToa, Living Hula, Kumumea, and Wehi’s Boutique. Kainoa Makua, who has collaborated with his father on various events for over two decades, emphasized the importance of vendor quality in creating a successful fair. “We have always believed that it is the vendors and the quality of their products who make the event,” he stated.
Entertainment and Community Engagement
In addition to shopping, attendees can enjoy live musical performances throughout both days. On Friday, artists such as Darlene Ahuna and Nailima Gaison and Friends will entertain, along with a performance by the students of Ke Kula Nawahiokalani‘opu‘u. Saturday’s lineup features Gavin Mata, Lito Arkangel, and Christy Lassiter, with Kuehu Mauga serving as the emcee.
The fair also includes prize drawings and a food concession offering a variety of local delicacies. “Every year we strive to make our event the best that it can be,” Kainoa Makua added. Best of all, entry to the fair is free, encouraging families to come together and enjoy the festive atmosphere.
