A new romance bookstore named Finney’s Books is set to open in East Austin, Texas, on December 13, 2023. Located at 3823 Airport Blvd., #D, the store aims to embrace the growing popularity of romance novels, which have seen a significant increase in sales over the past few years. According to consumer research company Circana, romance book sales are expected to double by 2025 compared to 2021 figures, highlighting the genre’s resurgence.
In recent times, romance novels have become a staple on fiction bestsellers lists, particularly within the romantasy subgenre. Despite their commercial success, these books often face criticism for their tropes and themes. Finney’s Books seeks to challenge this perception by creating “a welcoming and safe space for romance readers of all identities.” The store plans to offer a wide range of titles, from “sweet contemporary romances with a hint of spice” to more adventurous adult works that embrace drama and passion.
Owner Cameron Lagrone, who named the bookstore after her dog, expressed her enthusiasm for the genre on the store’s website. Lagrone noted, “In the last couple of years, like so many folks around me, I discovered the absolute JOY to be found in romance books. What I once thought of as outdated regressive stories have instead been a place where I’ve found stories that celebrate love and pleasure in all their forms.” She also emphasized the importance of representation, particularly with the increasing availability of queer love stories.
Grand Opening Festivities
The grand opening celebration will take place on December 13 from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Attendees will enjoy coffee from Please Stay Coffee and baked goods from The AniCakes Co., alongside other refreshments. The first 25 visitors will receive a free branded tote bag, while those who purchase a book will be entered into a giveaway for signed books and “bookish merch bundles.” Additionally, all customers will receive a bookmark while supplies last.
Finney’s Books is conveniently located at the corner of Airport Boulevard and 38th ½, featuring both onsite parking and street parking options along 38th ½ and Anchor Lane. Lagrone’s vision for the store is clear: to provide a space where romance enthusiasts can explore and celebrate the genre without judgment.
