Pentatonix Brings Holiday Spirit to Detroit with New Album

Pentatonix will perform their latest holiday album, Christmas in the City, at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit on December 3, 2023. The a cappella group, known for their festive music, has been a cherished part of the holiday season for over a decade. With seven Christmas albums, numerous EPs, and compilations under their belt, this year’s album features collaborations with a full orchestra, including a unique rendition of “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm” incorporating the legendary vocals of Frank Sinatra.

The quintet, formed in Texas, gained popularity after winning “The Sing-Off” in 2011, securing a recording contract that launched their successful career. This year, they aim to evoke the spirit of the season with a blend of timeless classics and original compositions. Co-founder Scott Hoying described the album as capturing the essence of urban Christmas life, with its bustling atmosphere and festive decorations.

Orchestral Collaboration and Concert Experience

Hoying shared insights from a recent Zoom interview, highlighting the artistic shift the group experienced while working with a large ensemble. He noted, “When you’re arranging completely a cappella, the background parts have to be long, sustained notes. But when there’s an orchestra, you can focus on the vocal parts being supplementary.” This collaboration introduced new challenges and opportunities, as they sought to maintain their signature sound amidst the orchestral backdrop.

While the current tour does not feature a live orchestra on stage, the group utilizes pre-recorded instrumentation to enhance their performances. Hoying explained the complexities of curating a concert that balances audience favorites with new material. “Over the years, we’ve learned what moments the audience loves… It’s like a puzzle,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of pacing to keep the energy alive throughout the show.

Future Projects and Personal Endeavors

Looking beyond the holiday season, Hoying revealed that Pentatonix is also developing original non-holiday songs and a significant project in television and film that has been in the works for years. Additionally, he is preparing a stage musical titled “Grim,” set to premiere in October 2024 in La Jolla, California. As for the next holiday album, he mentioned a playful direction, suggesting they may explore children’s Christmas songs, reflecting their personal lives as many band members are now parents.

In a personal update, Hoying recently participated in the latest season of “Dancing With the Stars,” where he finished in 10th place. He described the experience as transformative, saying, “It was so much fun… I felt like I was doing inner child therapy work out there on the dance floor.” His reflections illustrate the profound impact of stepping outside his comfort zone, enhancing both his personal and professional growth.

Pentatonix’s Christmas in the City concert promises to be a captivating celebration of the holiday spirit, blending nostalgia with fresh sounds. Fans can look forward to an evening filled with harmonies and joy as the group takes the stage at 7 p.m. on December 3 at Little Caesars Arena, located at 2645 Woodward Ave. in Detroit.
