William (Bill) Whiting, a beloved member of his community, passed away on October 5, 2025, at the age of 77 due to complications related to Alzheimer’s disease. His family and friends are remembering him for his warmth and dedication, leaving a lasting impact on those who knew him.
Bill was born on August 9, 1948, in Pennsylvania but moved to California many years later. He made his home in Santa Cruz around 1993. After being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s between 2019 and 2020, Bill was able to remain in his home for approximately four years, thanks in large part to the devoted care of his caregiver, Lupe. This support allowed him to maintain a level of independence for longer than many might expect under similar circumstances.
As his condition progressed, Bill transitioned to Westwind Memory Care in Santa Cruz, where he received exceptional care. His family expressed deep gratitude for the compassion shown by the staff, who treated him with dignity and respect during his time there.
Prior to his retirement, Bill dedicated his career as a Rehabilitation Counselor, providing invaluable support to individuals with disabilities through counseling and vocational services. He lived with his wife, Kate, on several acres in Bonny Doon, California, where they created a warm and welcoming home filled with love.
Bill cherished his family and friends, often reminiscing about his adventures sailing in the Caribbean with long-time friend and fraternity brother, Jim Diebold. These sailing trips were among his most treasured memories. His family and friends remember him for his kindness and passion for life, qualities that made an indelible mark on those around him.
In addition to his wife, Bill is survived by his sister, Maggie, his niece, Stacie, her husband, Loren, and their two sons, Jack and Luke. He is also survived by his cousin, Jeanette, and her family, who reside in Massachusetts.
Bill’s friends have paid tribute to him through meaningful gestures during his illness. Close friends Andy Pereira, Gene Stymiest, Dan Strom, and Dave Witteveen frequently visited him at Westwind, creating memories captured in heartfelt videos. One memorable moment included Dan Strom playing “Happy Birthday” on his harmonica during a celebration of Bill’s birthday.
The community is rallying to support Kate during this challenging time. Friends like Barb Stymiest, Richard Huffman, An Brunelle, and Linda Stevenson have been a source of comfort, offering assistance throughout Bill’s six-year journey with dementia.
Bill Whiting’s legacy will endure through the many lives he touched. He will be remembered not only for his professional contributions but also for the love and joy he brought to his family and friends. As the community mourns his passing, they celebrate the life of a remarkable man who will be deeply missed.
