Kidney Donation Deepens Bond Between Mitchell Uncle and Nephew

A life-changing kidney donation has significantly strengthened the bond between Dan Backlund, 71, and his nephew, Doug Backlund, 41, both of Mitchell. Doug donated his left kidney to Dan in April 2024, enabling his uncle to avoid dialysis and regain a healthier lifestyle. Now, Dan jokes about his newfound craving for garlic-filled olives, a humorous nod to the unexpected joys following the transplant.

The two shared their remarkable journey during a recent meeting of the Mitchell Lions Club, detailing the emotional and physical aspects of organ donation. Doug, who proudly displays the scar from his surgery, reflected on how this experience has deepened their family ties. “I’ve craved green olives since I was a little kid,” Doug shared, highlighting the odd connection between kidney health and culinary cravings.

Journey to Donation

Dan first discovered issues with his kidney function at the age of 16 during a routine physical examination. Over the years, his health declined, leading to discussions about a potential transplant six years ago. As he began the process of being placed on the donor list, Doug recognized his uncle’s need for a kidney and decided to take action.

“He called and said he wanted to talk… I said, ‘Why in the hell would you give me a kidney?’” Dan recounted. Doug’s straightforward response was simple: “Because you’re my uncle and you need one.” After consultations with medical professionals at the Rochester Mayo Clinic, Doug underwent a series of tests to determine if he was a match. The chances of their compatibility were low, akin to “winning the lottery,” as Doug described it.

In September 2023, Doug received confirmation that he was a match. Initially, they had scheduled the surgery for February 2024, coinciding with a quieter work period for Doug. However, pre-operative blood work revealed complications, necessitating a reschedule. Both uncle and nephew faced a roller coaster of emotions as they approached the surgery date, only to have it pushed back.

Successful Surgery and Recovery

Ultimately, the procedure took place in April 2024. Both Dan and Doug arrived at the hospital together and left after three days of recovery. Doug’s only request during this process was to document the experience visually. “Are we next to each other, side by side, in beds?” he wondered, eager to capture the moment. He was thrilled to receive photos of the surgical team transporting his kidney to Dan, which he fondly described as being carried on a silver platter.

According to the United Network for Organ Sharing, over 25,000 kidney transplant surgeries occur annually in the United States. Despite this, there are approximately 90,000 individuals currently on the waiting list for a kidney transplant. This stark reality underscores the significance of Doug’s generous act.

For Dan, receiving a kidney from his nephew was more than just a medical necessity; it represented a profound familial bond. “He fully understands how appreciative I am,” Dan expressed. The gift has allowed him to spend more time with his four grandchildren, a sentiment that resonates deeply within their close-knit family.

Organ donation remains a critical issue, and individuals interested in becoming donors can register through platforms such as the Health Resources & Services Administration website or during driver’s license renewals. Dan’s journey highlights both the challenges and rewards of organ donation, showcasing how such a selfless act can profoundly impact lives.
