RiverValley Behavioral Health has partnered with Owensboro High School in Kentucky to implement “QPR” suicide prevention training for students. This initiative, taking place from February 17 to February 20, 2026, will involve approximately 300 freshmen who will learn the essential skills to identify and respond to mental health crises.
Training Aims to Reduce Mental Health Stigma
The “QPR” framework, which stands for “Question, Persuade, Refer,” equips students with strategies to manage mental health challenges and recognize signs of suicidal behavior. Owensboro High School Principal Jennifer Luttrell emphasized the importance of this training, stating, “This training equips our students with an evidence-based strategy to manage their mental health, recognize signs of suicide, and take action that could save lives.”
The initiative arises from ongoing discussions between OHS officials and RiverValley Behavioral Health regarding the need for enhanced mental health awareness among students. The program aims to empower students to respond to crises with confidence and care, thereby fostering a supportive environment within the school community.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), suicide remains a leading cause of death among teenagers in the United States. Recent statistics from Kentucky highlight that a significant number of high school students have reported experiencing persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness.
Through the QPR training, students will learn to identify warning signs, ask appropriate questions, and encourage peers to seek help. They will also be connected to trusted adults and professional resources, mirroring the way CPR prepares individuals for medical emergencies.
Collaborative Effort to Enhance Student Support
Over the four-day training period, seven trainers from RiverValley Behavioral Health will conduct twelve sessions, ensuring that all participating students receive comprehensive instruction. This collaborative effort is part of a larger commitment to continue mental health training initiatives at Owensboro High School.
Plans are already underway for further training sessions aimed at seniors later in April 2026. The ongoing partnership between RiverValley Behavioral Health and Owensboro High School exemplifies a proactive approach to mental health education, aiming to equip students with the necessary tools to navigate challenges and support one another effectively.
As communities continue to confront the pressing issue of youth mental health, programs like QPR are vital in fostering resilience and awareness among students.
