Bellevue Launches ‘Diversity Advantage Plan 2035’ for Equity

The Bellevue City Council has introduced a new initiative aimed at enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout the city. The Diversity Advantage Plan 2035, unveiled during a recent council meeting, outlines a comprehensive strategy designed to improve access to city services and ensure that all communities benefit from positive impacts.

Goals and Community Input

During an open house held on November 20, 2023, city officials presented the plan, which includes 41 long-term equity objectives. These goals were developed based on feedback from community members and city staff, aligning with the council’s strategic focus areas. The plan articulates the city’s vision and commitment to fostering a more equitable community. Future council meetings will determine the next steps for implementing the plan, according to the City of Bellevue.

Alongside discussions on the Diversity Advantage Plan, the council also addressed proposed amendments to the city’s sign code. These amendments aim to modernize sign design, simplify existing regulations, and comply with relevant court decisions. The proposed changes suggest a focus on time-based standards for temporary signs, particularly in residential neighborhoods.

Supporting Local Businesses

Local businesses have highlighted the significance of signage for visibility and economic vitality, a viewpoint echoed by community feedback. To further engage the public, the City of Bellevue plans to enter a reviewing and drafting phase for the sign code, which will involve extensive outreach and community engagement. A finalized draft of the revised sign code is anticipated for council consideration in 2026.

Additionally, the council took the opportunity to honor local enterprises by proclaiming November 29 as Small Business Saturday. This initiative encourages residents to support the small businesses that constitute 97% of Bellevue’s business landscape. The owner of Monserrate Colombian Cuisine accepted the proclamation on behalf of the small business community, underscoring the vital role these establishments play in the local economy.

As Bellevue moves forward with these initiatives, the focus remains on creating an inclusive and equitable environment for all residents, demonstrating the city’s commitment to addressing community needs.
