A new South Indian restaurant is set to open in Philadelphia’s Northern Liberties neighborhood this spring. Bengaluru Cafe, owned by Sri Saravanan, will launch at 809 N. 2nd St. This expansion follows the success of the cafe’s original location in Fairfax, Virginia, which has been operating for nearly two years. In a recent interview, Saravanan expressed enthusiasm about entering the Philadelphia market, noting its appealing downtown area and accessibility.
Bengaluru, the capital of India’s southern Karnataka state, serves as the inspiration for the cafe, which will be Philadelphia’s first South Indian restaurant offering a completely vegan and vegetarian menu. The carefully curated offerings celebrate the authenticity of South Indian cuisine, featuring a variety of dishes that highlight the region’s rich culinary traditions.
Menu Highlights and Unique Offerings
The menu includes a range of chaats, appetizers, and shareable plates. Notable items include the tomato masala salad and vada pav, a beloved Indian street food that consists of a spicy potato fritter served on soft pav bread, accompanied by tangy chutneys. The cafe will also showcase dosas, which are thin, crepe-like specialties. Diners can choose from options such as masala dosa, filled with spiced potatoes, and Mysore masala dosa, layered with a spicy red chutney.
To complement the food, Bengaluru Cafe will offer a selection of beverages including milkshakes, fresh juices, South Indian filter coffee, and masala chai, ensuring that guests have traditional drink pairings to enhance their dining experience.
A Garden Atmosphere and Local Engagement
In line with its namesake, the cafe’s interior will feature abundant greenery, creating a garden-like atmosphere. Saravanan remarked, “Bengaluru is a garden city of India, so we brought in a little bit of a garden atmosphere with bamboo lighting. It has a greenery look, and it’s natural.” The design will utilize natural wood for tables and chairs, contributing to a warm and inviting environment.
Saravanan is keen to engage with the local clientele and understand the demographics of the area. He noted that the customer base is likely to be diverse, attracting both families and tourists. “We are excited to open and go live,” he stated, highlighting the anticipation surrounding the launch.
The team aims to open Bengaluru Cafe by the end of March 2024, with Saravanan optimistic about the timing, saying, “Good things happen in March.” For updates, customers can visit the cafe’s website or follow their social media accounts on Instagram and Facebook.
