Byron T. Gorres, a respected member of the Stillwater community and a former leader at 3M, passed away on February 21, 2026, at the age of 89. His significant contributions to the field of science and leadership during his 34-year career at 3M left a lasting impact on both the company and his colleagues.
Born into a family that valued education and hard work, Gorres dedicated his life to advancing scientific innovation. Throughout his tenure at 3M, he excelled as both a scientist and a leader, guiding projects that would influence various industries. His commitment to excellence garnered the respect of peers and the admiration of many within the corporate world.
He is survived by his loving wife, Georgene Gorres, and four children: Sheryl (Mike) Zaworski, Geoff Gorres, Gwen (Charlie) Gierke, and Brett (Angie) Gorres. The family also includes nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Gorres was preceded in death by his parents, a sister named Barbara, and a brother named Earl.
Funeral Arrangements and Community Tribute
A funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Friday, February 27, at the Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, located at 14107 Hudson Rd S., Afton, MN. The community is invited to pay their respects during a visitation on Thursday, February 26, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Simonet Funeral Home, 6429 Osgood Ave N., Stillwater, and at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery in Afton, where Gorres will be laid to rest among family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, reflecting Gorres’ lifelong commitment to his faith and community service. His legacy will continue to inspire those who knew him, and he will be remembered fondly for his warmth, wisdom, and dedication to both his family and his work.
