The Dallas Theater Center (DTC) has announced the appointment of Jaime Castañeda as its new artistic director, effective from July 2026. Castañeda, a seasoned figure in the regional theater landscape, will succeed Jonathan Norton, who is currently serving as the interim artistic director and will conclude his term with the world premiere of his play “Malcolm X and Redd Foxx Washing Dishes at Jimmy’s Chicken Shack” in Harlem in May 2026.
DTC board chair Lynn Pride Richardson expressed confidence in Castañeda’s capabilities, stating, “DTC is committed to artistic excellence and community engagement, and we believe Jaime’s experience, creativity, bold vision, and proven leadership, coupled with his dedication to innovation, will guide DTC into an exciting new chapter in the life of the theater.”
A Track Record of Success in Regional Theater
Castañeda’s connection to the Dallas-Fort Worth area spans over two decades. He launched his career by founding Firestarter Productions while still a student at Texas Christian University. His directorial work at DTC dates back to 2012 with the production of “The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity.” Beyond DTC, he has made significant contributions to other local theaters, including Kitchen Dog Theater, Amphibian Stage, and Circle Theatre.
His accolades include prestigious awards such as the Princess Grace Award and the Drama League Directing Fellowship. Castañeda holds a BFA from Texas Christian University and an MFA in Directing from the University of Texas at Austin. His recent work includes directing at prominent theaters nationwide, including American Conservatory Theater, South Coast Repertory, Huntington Theatre Company, and La Jolla Playhouse, where he served as associate artistic director from 2014 to 2018.
Looking Forward to New Beginnings
DTC’s executive director, Kevin Moriarty, praised Castañeda’s artistic vision and collaborative leadership style, noting, “Jaime brings a bold, visceral artistic vision, a deep commitment to new voices, and a collaborative leadership style that inspires artists and audiences alike.” Moriarty added that he has admired Castañeda’s work since 2007, recognizing him as one of the most exciting emerging directors in North Texas.
As he steps into his new role, Castañeda will be responsible for shaping the theater’s artistic vision, directing and producing plays and musicals, and overseeing DTC’s Diane and Hal Brierley Resident Acting Company. He aims to work closely with Moriarty, the staff, and the board to advance DTC’s mission and values.
The appointment follows a comprehensive national search conducted by Management Consultants for the Arts, co-chaired by board members Chris Luna and Lynn Pride Richardson. The search committee included a diverse group of theater professionals and stakeholders.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the new position, Castañeda stated, “Growing up in Texas, Dallas Theater Center was one of the first places where I saw what professional theater and excellence looked like. I’m thrilled to come back and build on the history of artists and leaders who have been a part of this organization.”
The Dallas Theater Center’s current production of “A Christmas Carol” is running through December 27, 2025, at the Wyly Theatre, offering audiences a festive experience before Castañeda officially takes the helm.
