Gackle Legion Hosts Veterans Day Celebration with Community Spirit

The American Legion Posts and Auxiliary Units from Gackle, Streeter, Fredonia, and Kulm came together to host a heartfelt Veterans Day event on November 11, 2023. The gathering took place at the Gackle Legion Hall, bringing the community together to honor those who have served in the military.

Attendees enjoyed a traditional Thanksgiving dinner catered by Dani’s Place, featuring a variety of dishes that celebrated the spirit of the holiday. Members of the Auxiliaries contributed homemade pumpkin and apple bars, adding a personal touch to the meal. Approximately 100 people participated in the event, which fostered camaraderie and reflection.

Jon Metz, Commander of Gackle Legion Post No. 250, welcomed guests and initiated the gathering with the Pledge of Allegiance. Following the meal, Chaplain Dave Paulson led the attendees in prayers, setting a respectful tone for the program that unfolded.

One of the highlights of the event was a speech by Bridger Rivinius, a student from Gackle-Streeter school, who shared insights from his experience at the Legion Boys State program in June. His reflections resonated with many, emphasizing the importance of youth engagement in civic activities.

Musical entertainment was provided by Myles Martin, another student from Gackle-Streeter, who performed “Yankee Doodle Boy” on the alto saxophone, accompanied by music instructor Corinne Muller. This lively performance added a festive atmosphere to the gathering.

In a poignant moment, Marella Koenig, a member of the Gackle Auxiliary, explained the significance of each element of the Missing Man Table setting. This tribute served as a reminder of the sacrifices made by veterans and their families.

Veteran Randy Entzminger delivered an engaging presentation entitled “Basic Training … The Adventure Begins,” sharing personal anecdotes and insights into military training. This segment captivated the audience, drawing attention to the experiences that shape service members’ journeys.

The event also recognized the winners of the 2025 State Poppy Poster contest: Jenna Homola, Courtney Remboldt, and Emma Heller. Their artistic contributions were celebrated as a demonstration of community spirit and pride.

As the gathering concluded, pianist Sharon Schlittenhard led the group in singing “The Star Spangled Banner” and “God Bless America,” further enhancing the patriotic atmosphere. To express gratitude, veterans were presented with homemade cards crafted by Gackle-Streeter elementary school students, showcasing the community’s appreciation for their service.

This Veterans Day event exemplified the commitment of the American Legion and local Auxiliaries to honor those who have served, while fostering a strong sense of community among participants.
