Guam Memorial Hospital Honors 33 Nurses with DAISY Awards

On November 18, 2023, the Guam Memorial Hospital Authority (GMHA) celebrated the exceptional contributions of its nursing staff by hosting the inaugural DAISY Award ceremony. A total of 33 nurses were recognized for their exemplary service and commitment to the community, reflecting the hospital’s mission to provide compassionate and skilled care.

The DAISY Award honors nurses who consistently demonstrate dedication and kindness in their work. According to a GMHA press release, the recipients of this award embody the values that the hospital stands for. During the ceremony, Interim GMHA Administrator Dr. Joleen Aguon highlighted the importance of compassion in nursing, stating, “Today’s nominees were remembered because someone felt truly cared for. That is powerful.”

Dr. Aguon acknowledged the challenging environment in which nurses operate, praising their resilience and commitment to patients and families. She remarked, “The small acts of kindness and strength you show every day may go unseen, but they matter deeply.”

Among the honored nurses, Danica Dianzon, an intensive care unit nurse, was named the first-ever DAISY Award honoree. Dianzon expressed her gratitude, saying, “I’m overwhelmed and grateful for everybody who helped me get this award. It takes the whole team. They have helped me grow and get here.” Dianzon graduated from the University of Guam in 2024 and joined the ICU after completing her residency. GMHA noted that she has earned admiration for her positive attitude and dedication.

The DAISY Award initiative aims to foster a culture of gratitude within healthcare settings, which is essential for supporting a positive work environment and enhancing patient care. The 33 nurses who were nominated represent various departments across GMH, including the ICU, progressive care unit, radiology, special services, surgical unit, labor and delivery, and neonatal intensive care unit.

Governor Lou Leon Guerrero, who also has a nursing background, addressed the nominees, acknowledging their wins and challenges. She emphasized the skills required to navigate high-stress situations, stating, “Nursing is a calling that demands skill, compassion, and enormous heart, and each of you embodies those qualities every day.”

Lt. Gov. Joshua Tenorio echoed the governor’s sentiments, emphasizing the significance of their work. He noted, “You care for our community in its most vulnerable moments, and you do it with grace, commitment, and humanity. Today’s celebration is a reminder of just how vital you are to our hospital and our island.”

The DAISY Award ceremony not only recognizes individual accomplishments but also reinforces GMHA’s ongoing commitment to supporting and retaining its nursing workforce. This initiative underscores the vital role nurses play in the hospital’s mission to provide quality patient care.
