Juan Luis Tafolla has made history by becoming the youngest elected council member in the history of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. At just 19 years old, Tafolla took the oath of office on January 5, 2026, marking a significant milestone in local governance. His family proudly supported him during the swearing-in ceremony, emphasizing the importance of his achievement both for himself and for the community.
Tafolla expressed his gratitude and excitement, stating, “It is an honor of a lifetime to be the youngest elected official in Kennett Square history. We made history together, and I look forward to serving the people of Kennett Square.” His mother, Claudia Tafolla, held the Bible on which he placed his hand during the ceremony, administered by Mayor Matt Fetick. “I am very proud of Juan,” she said, reflecting on his journey and the inspiration he provides to his younger siblings.
Growing up in Kennett Square, Tafolla has been involved in local governance since his teenage years. He served as a junior council member while attending Kennett High School, where he developed a passion for community service and political engagement. His experiences included a significant trip to Mexico, aimed at fostering relationships with local governments and communities.
Goals and Challenges Ahead
Now, as a full council member, Tafolla is focused on several key initiatives. He aims to address housing affordability, enhance cooperation with neighboring municipalities, and promote a more transparent and effective government. “In today’s economy, essentials are getting expensive, and people have to stretch their money further,” he noted. His proposed solutions include halting tax increases and advocating for more affordable housing options in Kennett Square, which is home to nearly 7,000 residents.
Tafolla specifically pointed out the need for a shift away from luxury housing developments, stating, “I would like to see a sign that says ‘affordable or mixed-price housing,’ not ‘luxury.’” He is particularly interested in the ongoing discussions regarding the NVF property, where plans for high-density housing are being considered. The council has recently voted to rezone the site from industrial to residential, ensuring that 15% of the new units will be reserved for lower-income families.
In addition to housing, Tafolla is keen on tackling the challenges posed by aging infrastructure in the borough. He highlighted the necessity of investing in repairs for potholes, water mains, and other critical structures to ensure community safety and longevity.
A Message for the Future
Tafolla’s journey serves as an inspiration for young people interested in local leadership. He encourages them to remain engaged in their communities, stating, “If I can do it, you can do it as well. Most importantly, be involved in your community.” He expressed deep appreciation for those who supported him throughout his campaign and the election process, noting that his victory was a collective achievement.
On election night, Tafolla received 1,071 votes, setting a record in Kennett Square. His commitment to community engagement is evident in his fluency in Spanish, a skill he hopes to leverage in his role as a council member, particularly given his family’s roots in Mexico.
As the youngest council member and one of the first two Hispanic Americans serving simultaneously on the council, Tafolla is poised to make a lasting impact in Kennett Square. He concluded with a powerful statement reflecting his dedication to public service: “Change begins when someone decides to step forward.”
