Lee County Approves $2.1 Million for Sanibel Lighthouse Pier

The Lee Board of County Commissioners is set to approve a substantial budget transfer of $2,148,209 for the construction of a fishing pier at the Sanibel Lighthouse Beach Park. This decision will be made during their upcoming meeting scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on March 3, 2024, at the Old County Courthouse Commission Chambers located at 2120 Main St., Fort Myers.

The funding request, initially presented by Commissioner Kevin Ruane during the February 3 board meeting, aims to transfer funds from the Tourist Development Tax Common Reserve to the Beach and Shoreline Fund. Ruane, who served as the mayor of Sanibel for over a decade, emphasized the importance of this project for both residents and visitors to the area.

Included in the agenda are detailed materials outlining the preliminary construction costs prepared by engineers. These documents highlight necessary expenditures such as the removal of the existing structure, materials required for the new pier, and the installation of a fish-cleaning station, shade structure, and bicycle railing. The project is designed to enhance recreational opportunities and improve public access to the waterfront.

The agenda for the meeting is publicly accessible in advance, allowing community members to review the details prior to the vote. Those interested can find it at leecofl.portal.civicclerk.com/event/222/files/agenda/468.

This funding initiative reflects ongoing efforts by local government officials to invest in infrastructure that supports tourism and enhances the quality of life for residents. The approval of this budget transfer is seen as a critical step toward revitalizing the Sanibel Lighthouse area, which remains a popular destination for fishing and outdoor activities.
